Money coming in says I've made the right marketing decisions!
~Adam Osborne
Have you ever asked yourself how technology can multiply your efforts and bring about your desired result in a powerful way and a short time? Whether you are trying to be more connected with friends and family, find that long lost college roommate, find a job or promote your business and increase revenue, the evolving world of technology and social networking can be your answer.
Most people have used a piece and part of social technology without even realizing it, but wouldn't be able to define the term. Social Technology is the combination of websites, tools, databases, networks, cell phones, etc. that foster, promote and enable the world of social networking. In reality, this isn't anything new as the telegraph and telephone were also "Social Technology".
Social Networking is simply the act of purposely and actively being in contact with people and/or organizations in order to meet a personal, professional or financial need. Multi-level marketing, parent teacher organizations, leads groups, Toastmasters and professional associations are all long-standing examples of social networking. Just as the telephone changed the way people interact, the digital era has brought a new twist to our need for contact.
It used to be that we had to have some proximity to the people with whom we network. In addition, we used to need some venue to connect such as a group (PTO), a membership (golf or country club) or professional organization. That is no longer the case. Sites like Classmates, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Plaxo, Digg, etc. all provide a way for people to connect over a common (or even a not so common) interest, bond or relationship. These all fall into a class of Websites known as Social Networking Sites. We can now reconnect with old classmates, colleagues and friends as well as make new connections, promote our ideas, products or businesses and learn things about people we would have never known otherwise. We can do all this across the globe regardless of locale, socioeconomic status or group membership.
The most common and widely used Social Networking Sites are Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and Twitter. Up and coming social networking sites are foursquare and Grandparents.com. Click the links to learn more about these sites and gain some tips on how to capitalize on their usefulness.
